Explore the Library of Things at the Riverdale Public Library

We offer more than just books, check out our collection of tools, hobby tools, technology, board games, and more.

Our Library of Things lets patrons borrow non-traditional items—tools, games, equipment—just like books. Here’s how to use it and what’s available in our current collection.

How to borrow

  • Eligibility: Any library cardholder in good standing may borrow Library of Things items. Bring your physical card or have your account number ready.

  • Checkout period: Most items check out for a set loan period (varies by category). Check the item record or ask staff for the specific length and any renewals allowed.

  • Holds and reservations: If an item is checked out, you may place a hold. We’ll notify you when it’s available.

  • Pickup and return: Pick up and return items at the main circulation desk during open hours. Return items in the same condition and with all components (parts, chargers, manuals, etc.).

  • Fees and deposits: Some items may require a refundable security deposit or have higher replacement fees. Late fees may apply for overdue items.

  • Use policy: Items are for personal use only unless otherwise specified. Do not modify or disassemble equipment. Follow manufacturer instructions and any safety guidelines provided by staff.

  • Damaged or missing parts: Report damage immediately. You may be responsible for repair or replacement costs if damage or missing components are beyond normal wear.

Tips for a smooth experience

  • Inspect items at pickup: Verify all parts and accessories are present and report any issues before leaving.

  • Reserve early for events: Popular items (party supplies, board games) may need advance reservations.

  • Read instructions: Follow included manuals and safety instructions. For food-related items (bakeware), ensure proper cleaning before return.

  • Return on time: Avoid fines and keep items available for others.

  • Ask staff: We’re happy to explain policies, suggest items, or demonstrate how equipment works.
